As many as 15 microentrepreneurs who sell various traditional foods and snacks such as kolak
(fruit cooked in coconut milk and brown sugar),fruit juice, nasi timbel (rice cooked in a banana
leaf), cookies and various snacks unique of Bandung, etc. took part in a three-day "Ramadhan Bazaar"
held in the parking ground of Carrefour Kiara Condong, Bandung
This Bazaar was conducted to give an opportunity for these micro entrepreneurs to sell to a
much bigger customer base compare to their usual market which are their own neighboursand also
to expose them to a new experience which was how to deal with typical Carrefour customers whom are
more critical.
Dian Rahmawati, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager of PT Carrefour
Indonesia said, Carrefour intended to introduce these micro entrepreneurs to different sets
of customers so that these micro entrepreneurs would be able to learn how to improve service, display,
product quality, appearance, packaging, pricing or hygiene. Those matters are important for our
typical customers.
For 39-year-old Dede Sukaesih, a mother of three from Cibodas, Antapani,
Bandung, this was the first time she could get an opportunity to sell her products in a bazaar
after making various kinds of snacks for five years.
After being laid-off from a textile mill,
Dede began to earn a living making snacks from rice, glutinous rice and flour. She leaves her
snacks on consignment in the stalls in the neighborhood or sells them from door to door in her
village.
The snacks were difficult to sell well as many did not pay cash. So sometimes I’m hard up
capital-wise when my customers do not settle their debts properly," Dede said."
By joining this bazaar, I get to sell more goods directly, which enables my capital to turn over faster," Dede continued.
Participating in the bazaar also prompts Dede to try out some more unconventional selling methods. "I
try to come up with more interesting packaging, add some stock and different selling techniques.
This bazaar has also had a positive effect on my confidence."
Starting last year, Dian said, funded by Carrefour International Foundation (CIF), Carrefour
started giving capital assistance to Bina Artha’s Micro entrepreneurs.
In 2007, CIF channeled funds worth 112,000 euro or about
Rp 1.35 billion and extended up to 135,000 Euro or about Rp 1.85 billion in 2008.
Up to end of July 2008, the funds were distributed to 1,948 micro entrepreneurs in Jakarta and its
surrounding area and , Bandung. Specifically in Bandung, 1,097 micro entrepreneurs have enjoyed
the loans, which have come to a total of Rp 1.285 billion.
However, spirit of the program extends
beyond providing financial assistance as Carrefour intends to integrate capacity building as
part of it. For instance, in May 2008, training on "Hygiene" for 150 micro entrepreneurs
from Jakarta and its surrounding area was conducted and, in July 2008, it was "Family Financial
Management" held in Kopo Square, Bandung for 90 micro entrepreneurs. Similarly, this Ramadhan
Bazaar is not merely a Bazaar, rather this is an experiment for these micro whether or not they could
stretch their comfort zone due to a more demanding market. Capacity Building for Micro Entrepreneurs
